In the heat
her fingers sizzle from inside out
raising an ocean on her forehead
rivers racing down her back,
internal pressure steam driven engine
hissing irritably
summer outside
summer inside
In the heat
her fingers sizzle from inside out
raising an ocean on her forehead
rivers racing down her back,
internal pressure steam driven engine
hissing irritably
summer outside

I breathe in air so warm
the hairs in my nose sizzle,
I attempt to read, but
heat melts my resolve.
The porch swing is like a hot bath,
washing away concern and energy.
Languid summer afternoon,
Shuswap heat wave.

Fell asleep trying to read on my porch this afternoon. When I came inside, I checked the thermometer: 43 C which is 109.4 F. Just a tad warm!
Summer bakes us all
we glisten, basted,
glossy, full of scent
on the beach coconut
on the track athletic musk.
The dog lies panting
collapsed in a cool for now spot
We long for air conditioning
and winter ice.
I am a kernel
dancing on the hot pavement.
I’m ready to pop!
All evening
the hills have been
illuminated by a
laser light show,
and now
the skies are
streaming;
white mist
hides the hills,
enfolding us
as the heavens
flash and crash
above.
The dogs collapse
in hot heaps.
Summer’s simmering
settles into evening
breeze, but
the sun drops
ever earlier,
and autumn calls.
On this
summer day,
lost in you,
I see no end.

This poem is my 1500th post! 🙂
There are a few ways to read this one, each painting a slightly different picture.
In dead of winter
when I am bundled in sweaters,
nursing hot chocolate
and shivering,
I will remember
sliding open the back door today
and how I was hit with a wall of air
so hot my finger tips feel
they’re glowing like ET’s.
In the meantime,
I’m grateful for a/c
and find typing with
molten finger tips
very interesting.

The porch swing rocks
beneath a speckled sky.
Mosquito hums fill the air;
black wings swoop overhead
in invisible rustlings,
swallowing music.
