You stand silently apart

You hover on the edges

distinct

observant

I mingle like sugar in water

wondering

wishing

longing

to draw you

into my arms

to hold you

to anchor you.

But you don’t know where

those hands have been.

You seek a quiet place

to find a peaceful oasis

for the discomfort of that skin

for the ramble of those thoughts

for the torture of that crowd

I stand apart

and watch you pull yourself

in pieces

I’m laughing and chatting

and wishing I could be enough

to give you courage

strength

faith in yourself,

but I’m not.

No matter how much

my heart is full to bursting

with wanting it.

You have to be

enough

alone.

Another re-post of an old favourite, as I try to get some words done on my CampNaNoWriMo project!

Shawn L. Bird's avatarShawn L. Bird

This poem was written as a submission to the Burnaby Writers Society Poetry contest.  The theme was fire, and poets were encouraged to interpret the theme.  Still 2 months before winners will be announced.

September 2011: This one was a contest finalist! Yay!

.

You reached

into the flames

and  plucked an ember

that glowed with

happiness and hope

upon your palm.

.

In the

wavering sphere

of gold and crimson

light, I glimpsed our

future in flickering

depths.

.

But when I reached to take it in my grasp

you clasped

your fist closed,

so the glow

of my hope

spilled

from

your

fingers.

.

“No,” you said.

“It will burn you.”

.

Truth scorched through

the kindness in your eyes, but could not

extinguish my anguish,

even as you wrapped me in your arms

and murmured worthless words of consolation.

.

I didn’t want your wisdom.

I…

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

I’ve travelled roads I’ve never walked

Leapt chasms I’ve not seen

Met madmen, trolls, and dreamers, and

watched lovers, lairds and queens.

I’ve journeyed to the future, friend

and I’ve explored the past

I’ve heard the thoughts of robots, dogs,

slaves, aliens and rats.

I’ve been around this great wide earth

and fantastic worlds, too

I’ve lived a thousand lifetimes, and

I’ve swum in oceans blue

A magic travel agency’s

in pages if you look.

Explore lives you’ve not imagined,

Come sit  and read a book.

You are a solid trunk,

knarled, mossy, tall

You look up

hearing Vivaldi

through the Rockies,

as I bud yellow green,

blossom pink,

blow petals on the breeze,

absorb the sun,

grow rich green,

dance in summer storms,

glow molten gold

firey orange and flaming blood,

throw all my soul

into the sky

and when pretention

falls away,

I rest,

naked,

upon you

and renew.

I lost myself

searching for you.

I faded away

on filaments of fog;

I was ephemeral

but you were there

all along: a tall

strong fortress.

Grey walls

forbidding

forboding

forth coming

for nobody seen.

My cloud self

enwraps you,

enclosing us,

and we become

mystery.

Here’s an interesting article listing wonderful words for concepts.  The comments are interesting as well.  Check it out !

(Bonus- now the first line to the theme from Laverne and Shirley makes sense!)

Today I am half my father’s age.

We creep toward century and half century

No one believes either of us.

Thanks for those genes.

My body is rebelling

against my good nature.

There is a pain in my foot

new since yesterday.

I have no tolerance

for such nonsense.

Beautiful shoes

are essential to life!

Fighting the act of

stubborn hormonal

belly fat with half rations and

gym trips.  Getting stronger

but the scale remains

stubborn.

A celebration

is in order.

There are no

crinkles or wrinkles yet.

If my hair is grey,

it’s also blue, fuchsia,

and purple.

The nose I hate

sports a jewel.

Celebrate what you dislike,

turn it around.

Find diamond in coal.

Time to photograph

the evidence.

This is me.

Last year before

a half century pivots.

Dad’s second half was better

than the first.

All I dreamed is coming true.

My second half century

will be euphoric!

.

.

I have a photo shoot arranged for today for some new author photos.  I’ll post the results when they’re in.

July 13- click MEDIA KIT and ABOUT SHAWN for some of the shots.  A very talented photographer!

As long as

I desire you at bedtime

and you desire me upon waking,

I think it will work out.
