I see you
in the distance
across a roomful of heads,
tall and silent
watching them with a
pleasant blankness-
a smile that turns your mouth
but doesn’t light your eyes.
You stand above
conversation,
listening without interest,
putting in the time
required for politeness.
My eyes call to you
and you turn,
one eyebrow raises a greeting
and your lips rise with it,
I see the flash of gladness,
as you incline your head
and step toward my love.

It’s great but hey, you know that. 🙂
It’s always nice to hear someone likes your work. 😉
enjoyed this! loved the line, “a smile that turns your mouth but doesn’t light your eyes.”
Me, too. 🙂 It took awhile to craft it so I was satisfied with the image. I’m glad you noticed!
Reminds me of a song/music video by one of my favorite bands, Silversun Pickups, titled “Lazy Eye”. Great poem!
I will have to go listen to that. Thanks for sharing the connection.
I sense feelings here of social awkwardness, wanting only to keep company with those close. Much to think about in this. Nice.

Shyness, superiority, boredom, distraction… Lots of possible reasons.
It reminds me of me: I’m tall and I don’t do well at parties from some mixture of awkwardness or social anxiety or something. Of course, my suspension of disbelief breaks when someone beckons me across the room with love in her eyes, so the similarities end there. =P
On a more serious note, I liked the poem, I felt a connection with the person being observed.
lol! I hope you find your better half, who will make your eyes twinkle across a room! 🙂
