No

Why imagine that?

You can’t do that!

That’s not for the likes of you.

No

That’s all they ever said.

I had to stay in this rut

and be what they had settled for

But

my wishes had wings

My dreams dredged deeper

and where I am

is a place of possibility

too great for them to see

Michaelangelo could look

into a rock and see the face of angels

like me

I totally get this. Only this year did I start writing poetry and believe I could do it. I am still insecure about my poetry (as opposed to my nonfiction) but getting more and more confident

    • It’s only been 6 mos or so that I’ve added “poet” to my descriptor on blog and business cards, and yet I’ve been writing poetry since I was a kid. We have to embrace our destinies, eh? Keep writing, Jen!

An aesthetic poem whose aspirational tidings lead to one of the most perfect denouements that I have ever read.

  11. This is beautiful! I particularly like the line, “I had to stay in this rut and be what they had settled for.” I think that’s brilliant, and perhaps I relate to it just a bit! This poem is elevating, Shawn.
