poem- amazing? October 14, 2015

When you said my outfits are always amazing

did you mean they cause great surprise?

or that they leave you in wonder

or that you find them astonishing?

I’m not sure it’s good that you think I dress

in ways that are astonishing, astounding,

surprising, stunning, staggering, shocking,

startling, stupefying, breathtaking;

awesome, awe-inspiring, sensational,

remarkable, spectacular, stupendous,

phenomenal, extraordinary, incredible,

unbelievable; mind-blowing, jaw-dropping;

or wondrous.

Was your comment verbal irony?

or have I tipped the scales into weirdness?

I’m sure I’m not really so startlingly impressive.

But if you truly think so,

Thanks.

I guess.

Someone I admire made this comment at an event, and while I took it as a compliment, I pondered that one can disguise true opinion in the flexibilities of English!  What is irony but a twist of meaning?  With thanks to the Google dictionary for this one.

  1. Great writing. This piece gives a nice bit of insight into whats appropriate! I am sure you must have looked beautiful!!

  2. Jim Stewart's avatar Jim Stewart Says:

    Wife: “You gonna wear THAT shirt?” Daughter: “Nice outfit, Dad.” (usually with a smirk). Others: “Well. That’s unique.” I just wonder what the fuss is about. If it’s clean, I just put it on. If it’s not clean, sometimes I put it on anyway because it’s comfortable. I guess that’s my fundamental criterion.

  3. Nandita's avatar Manan Unleashed Says:

    Loved it!

    Hi Shawn, Amazing poem! 😉 I often wonder how what I say is taken by the person I say it to. This is a great telling of that. We don’t really ever know what is going on in anyone’s head, do we? But it is true to note, that we should all be cognizant of what we say and how we say it 🙂

  5. howardat58's avatar howardat58 Says:

    “Do I look fat in this?”

    • Words never to ask, because you never want the reply. My husband has learned to say, “That’s not my favourite of your outfits” but usually just has a look of incredulity that says, “Please don’t make me go out in public with you looking like that!” Sometimes I torture him. Sometimes I change. 🙂

  6. I have received “Thank you”, in a way that cuts far more to the quick than any insult possibly could.

    I feel similar for many a reason.

  8. tone of voice tells more truth than words. it is so refreshing when they match, and one can feel they are talking with a sincere person.
