The tiny vessel
zips around the floating logs
pushing them here and there.
Sorting them.
Guiding them to the mill piles.
Leading them to lumbering destiny.
And you,
zip around me
pushing me into order
sorting out my messes
guiding me to better decisions
leading into our future.

“lumbering destiny” — great choice of words! Makes me smile–lumbering along to my destiny–pushed and pulled here and there. Yep. Someday I might make it!
Thanks, Shawn.

My pleasure, thanks for coming by.
I liked the form for this poem with the parallel lines (line 2 matches line 8, line 3 matches line 9, etc.). How was this done? Did you think of lines 2 – 6 first and use that as a guide for lines 8 – 12? Did you work on each match separately (for example you wrote lines 2 and 8 together and then wrote lines 3 and 9 together)? Did you do something else?
Saw the tug boat working in the lumber yard on my way to work today.
Pondered during the drive.
Wrote the top half of the poem.
Stared at it.
Thought I should expand it into a metaphor.
Tried a couple of lines. Didn’t like it. Copied the verbs from the top half. Liked that better.
Stared at the poem.
Decided I didn’t like the last line, because I want something that sort of looks like the word ‘destiny’ rather than future.
Checked rhymezone.com for “words that sound like destiny.” Had no success. Grumbled. Published it anyway.
Still contemplating the last line. May yet alter it. Divinity? Definitely?
Nice; I like this one a lot! 😀
Thank you.
Wow I really like this. I can just picture the boat pushing the logs into order! Great comparison.
Thank you. It’s a very cute little boat. I used to watch it towing huge log booms across the lake (and one such scene features in Grace Awakening Power) but lately I just see it around the mill.
Just bought your book – looking forward to reading it this summer!
Wonderful! Thanks very much. I hope you enjoy it. If so, please leave a review somewhere. (Goodreads, Amazon, etc) 😉
Will do!
