poem- what are you saying? February 8, 2014

The dress is tight

and youthful.

You beam, when people say

“You look great!”

But from a distance

they observe

the bulges from

the botched cosmetic surgery,

and the fake parts glued here and there.

They sigh how sad it is

that you feel you need to try so hard

to be a plastic doll

instead of you.

True beauty is not

about artificial expectations

it’s about being confident

as you are

and celebrating

that your uniqueness

is beautiful.

  11. That was a big “like” for this poem’s message. Nice to read such ideas, given that we live in an age of narcissism.

The popular boy in high school, that handsome and tall sports star, is now a round, bald blob on the couch watching life pass him by. The popular girl who lived for the looks has nothing else to offer when the wrinkles start forming and gravity sags her body. As the years pass, I can see where being left with the option of developing a personality, a talent, and a skill was the greater gift. 🙂

    • Absolutely. I have been stunned seeing former beauty queens whose suntanning has left them leathery prunes. I don’t think there’s anything worse than “peeking in high school.” There is so much life beyond those few years!
