I lost a poem today

It came to me, a shy friend

and whispered in my ear

such beautiful words.

I savoured them

and rolled them on my tongue

but before I could make a

penned permanence

of friendship

it flitted away,

leaving loss

and longing

in its place.

  1. Poems can do that Shawn, sometimes sounding so good in your head and then, they flit away…..maybe tomorrow it will return.

I often have this happen. I create such epic poems or stories at work, but, by the time I get to write them down….gone into the ether. parts surface again over time, but, never to the level I had in my head at the start. I truly connected with this one Shawn.

    • Yup. Often they do return, but this one waved going over a hilltop and I had NOTHING to recall. Strangely, I have an image of a little girl in braids waving with a smirk. Come to think of it, she might have been Flavia de Luce. Perhaps she had a potion to mess with my memory…

Such a great topic to write about! This happens all the time with me – might be early signs of my mind becoming senile. Sorry if this really did happen – you however turned the tide by creating this fun little piece about such a common issue.

Oh yes, very familiar this is to me. Such a beautiful way of describing this and bringing life to your brief visitor!

    I can so relate …

… sometimes, though, it leaves a seed that gets planted elsewhere.

  7. It’s not lost, just misplaced for a while.

I’m glad it left this one in its place.

Lovely poem. How true it is and not just with poetry, it’s part of my daily life.

I really like your poetry, and I can definitely relate to this one. Happened to me yesterday!

Memory would make more of it than it perhaps was and sadness would ensure it was without equal. The ones that get away can be like fishermen’s tales. But one, perhaps one in a million may be that precious jewel that completes our Crown.
    xxx Huge Hugs Shawn xxx

  13. Main and Major reasons I keep a journal and pen by my bed. My poems seem to whisper to me either late at night or very early in the morning. Dawn and Dusk is when the sift through my memory banks.

I’ve lost several myself. Sometimes I think my brain has sprung a leak. I loved the one that took its place. I really enjoy your writing. Glad I actually had time to jump on here today to read this.

I think we can all relate to this poem, There have been so many times when I’m thinking of lines, then by the time I get to a piece of paper, they are gone. Nicely put together, Shawn.

Oh, I can totally relate. The best poems are often those unwritten, those that flit away.

  17. So true, Shawn. I don’t know how many times something comes to me — often when I am driving, unfortunately, but by the time I get back to it, the thought is gone. I often keep a recorder in my car for such occasions.

  18. OMG!!! This is Soooo true, It happens to me all the time…
    xx

😦 sad to hear you’ve also lost a poem. It is always a tragedy when this happens, I too have lost poems in the past, I miss them all. Hugs

  21. I love this one! The sounds and pacing are marvelous!

  22. Haha that’s a great take. Writing can be frustrating like that 😛
