I love you

I want to be with you

he said

but I can’t ever call you beautiful

I’ll say lovely

and that’s better

She nodded uncertainly

wondering what that meant

Years later

she reminded him of his words.

I was an ass,

he said.

But he still could not

bring himself

to say the word.

  1. I feel like I just “liked” someone’s post about a tragedy on Facebook. I appreciate this beautiful poem, it IS beautiful, but so very, very tragic… I don’t “like” tragedy per se.

Well written 🙂 thanks for sharing this

It’s a bit sad this one. I think he’s still an ass.

This makes me wonder what kind of life they led together. If he was not able to call her beautiful what else could he not do with her?

I love the type of words that make me think. Very good writing.

  5. Beauty is one of those words most people underrate. It encompasses so much: respect, loyalty, appreciation…even Love. But to admire beauty you have to submit to it, and that’s why it’s recognition is so rare. I really thought this post is one of your best.

    • What a wise observation, Amos: We must submit to beauty. I usually think of embracing beauty or appreciating it, but we do submit in so many denotations and connotations of that word. Thank you. I’ll ponder that for a while.

This is great… the knotty “story” here is very interesting.

  8. Jo Says:

That is quite sad. I’m not sure for whom
