Two horses, white and bay
stand companionably
munching their lunches.
Atop the bay,
upon each vertebrae,
perches a bitty bird,
observing the world:
A small flock aligned
along an equine
telephone line.
The white mare, back bare,
munches, and muses
on popularity’s
winners and losers.

Coming home from work the other day, I looked into a field and was amused to see this sight. I wish I’d had my camera with me, but since I didn’t, here’s a picture made from words for you. 😉
I accuse you of having too much fun writing this Ms. Bird! You’ve gathered every tonal trick in the book, liberally sprinkled lyrical resonance then seasoned with wit before serving to us unsuspecting beggars a banquet fit for a King. Bravo.
The interpretation is longer than the poem! lol Glad you enjoyed it.
Aussiemandias? Ha ha. Shall I look on your works and despair? 😉
Ohhh – Shawn fancies Shelley! Great taste.
English teacher. If I didn’t recognize the allusion, it’d be pretty pathetic! lol
The last lines about ‘winners and losers’ reminded me of a race horse I have a share in who sadly for me is more loser than winner.
Oh dear! I hope the fortune changes!
very nicely expressed, and I really like your perspective- namely, the subject your perception searches out
People say, “How do you find something to write about every day?” but I always see several moments throughout a day that I want to capture!
No photograph needed.
You painted a great picture of what you saw.
Thank you!
I love this poem, especially the “near-rhyme” and subject. And thank you so much for liking “Cicadan Love Call.”
Glad you enjoyed it, and it was my pleasure. 🙂
Masterful use of language! In love with your poetry!
Thank you.
this is really cool, I like the flow of the last part where you start with ‘the white mare’, it’s pleasing to the ears when you read it aloud.
Thanks. It’s a little tricky playing with rhyme while using irregular meters. I think it is best read aloud, for sure. 🙂 Glad you enjoyed it. I was really pleased to discover brown horses are called bays. It was very helpful! 😉
Many thanks for finding and following dragonshades and above all for introducing me to your writing.
My pleasure, and thanks!
