My scheduled time to sit vigil by your bed
was one o’clock this afternoon.
I was there, but you were gone.

when his stopped.
Waiting.

counting the space between breaths
that stretch the silence
before the next crackling,
static filled gasp
of a soul tuning toward
eternity.
