Talking to Oprah Winfrey, David Copperfield says the secret of success has three parts:

Passion

Preparation

Persistance

If you love what you do, you work diligently at your craft, and you stick to it, despite set backs and discouragement, eventually, you will achieve your goal.

It seems to be the case in my experience.  How about you?

But you are already a success. You have a loving husband, two nice kids and a job. You probably own your own house. Why do you need yet more approval? I’m always a bit suspicious of people who crave to be famous. What is driving them? Are they in some ways a bit insecure about who they are? These are my thoughts on it.

    • I don’t know that it’s about fame, but it is probably about having a larger audience for the messages that you have to share. Poetry and story are ways of interacting with the world that involve throwing your ideas into a sea and hoping for someone to give them consideration.

For me, toiling to create worlds and messages that only I knew about wasn’t very fulfilling. Inviting other people into my world is a wonderful adventure. It’s not likely to make me famous, but having others acknowledge those things that are key to my identity goes a long way toward satisfaction.

It also opens up opportunities to share the gift of words with others. There are so many people who have stories locked inside them that they need to get out to understand their past, to embrace their future, to celebrate their existence. I love teaching in workshops. I need to have some proof that I’m worth listening to, though. 😉 Publications are proof.

Besides, there’s no greater fun than having a stranger come up and say, “I’m reading your book! I LOVE IT!” Then they tell me where they’re at and what they’re thinking. I created a world, and people like it there. That’s awesome.

I agree with the 3 P’s, but I also believe ‘luck’ is part of the recipe. I am certain many people would disagree with this sentiment, but I believe it is true.

btw, is it a typo in the word PERSISTANCE? or, it’s intentional?
