Flying oilslick

on thrumming wings

collapses on my pine tree

and stares at me

daring me.

My protectors

bark their disapproval

and it languidly lifts off

trailing them behind.

Until they reach the fence,

then, tails

immensely satisfied,

lope back to me,

for their reward.

Black garbed intimidators

with steely eyes

do not impress

the wolf clan.

This is a comfort.

The ‘Flying Oilslick’ is a wonderful description though I confess I quite like crows as I see an immense amount of intelligence behind their full stop eyes.xxx Huge Hugs Shawn xxx

    • Oh indeed! Our driveway is a magnet for crows, which seem to favour it for nut cracking. They bring their bootie from elsewhere (I have not seen a walnut or hazelnut tree anywhere around our house), perch on the lines and drop them… My mom had a nice dip in her driveway that they liked as well. They bring chestnuts and leave them in the puddle; they’d return in a few days when the nuts had swollen and cracked open. Very, very smart birds.

Isn’t it interesting to see how Nature speaks to us and how we interpret what we see and hear. I see crows as the messengers of the universal magic of intelligent creativity and resourcefulness- as in creative writing. Dogs (and other creatures) instantly pick up on our intent and feelings rooted in fear or love and respond to that. I really enjoyed the story of this poem. Many thanks Shawn! Shelley
