     I do timed exercises with my students and ask them what they discover. They will frequently say how they had nothing to write, but once they started, all sorts of unexpected things poured out. A valuable lesson for young writers to learn, I think!

       Timed exercises work well. I used them often for short compositions writing exercises.

   I’m interested in the root causes of writer’s block. After forty years of writing, I’ve just experienced it for the first time. It’s all grist to the mill.
