I am a firm believer in the William Stafford practice of daily writing. His practice isn’t unique, of course, but that’s the guy who got me to pay attention and spread some ink everyday.
When I’m in writing mode (as opposed to finishing grad school mode, or rehearsing for a play mode, or recovery mode 🙂 ) I aim for a measly 500 words a day. I can always talk myself into writing 500 words, and it usually ends up turning into more.
Yeah, I don’t care if it’s only one sentence. And I follow Mr. Stafford’s advice when it’s not going well: “lower your expectations”
