He says
her laughing smile
captivated him.
The smartest girl in the school
he thought, as he sat silently
at the back of the class.
Too good for him.
The only girl who listens
to that crap classical music
that you like, they told him.
So he braved to venture a date,
but she turned him down
in favour of dorm pork chops
He was determined,
and Mozart entertained
Before she knew what had happened
she had a ring on her finger,
and a lifetime
of devotion promised.
Her laughing smile is
not quite as captivating,
she’s unlikely to be
the most intelligent
in the room,
time brings rationalization,
after all
she says he’s too good for her
with laughing eyes
that are still his.

Very good
Glad you like it, Richard.
I did 🙂
Marvellous poem. An allegory on love and life
Thanks, Rajiv.
This was so heartwarming. It took me back to my high school days and romance 🙂
lol Hope you have some good memories!
lol not so much, but memorable for sure 🙂
Reblogged this on The Mirror Obscura and commented:
A poignant poem for a Sunday morning well written. >KB
Please don’t be offended by the photo of Divine I put up on my home page. It’s wry humor and it will get readers interested to read the rest of the poem.>KB I’ll take it down for something else if you want.
I don’t see it when I click to see what you mean. Did you take it down already?
Actually you have to go to my home page and it only shows the botytom of her gown but it was a great pic. >KB
A lovely story – and (having recently been listening to lots, including Reger’s variations) I like the Mozart background music.
lol It was the movie actually. Generally the regular soundtrack to our life is Bach’s Goldberg Variations
A universal story, captured beautifully, Shawn.
Thank you, Susan.
Beautiful :’)
Thank you
Beautiful, Shawn, and so like my experience when I met my most handsome, most intelligent, sweetest guy, who has been my husband for thirty-seven years.
You’ve got me beat by a few years, but we’ll keep working in that direction. 🙂
A beautiful story poured into the glass as wine of poetry…. liked it
Lovely metaphor!
Thank you Shawn
This hits me hard.
Hopefully in a good way!
That was beautiful!
Thanks
You are most welcome!
Funny how that happens … great poem.
Thank you.
This was lovely! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Ah perfect romantic Spring poem 🙂
because a young lady’s fancy turns… 😉
Dorm pork chops – that is a priceless term!!
lol
Rational love is an oxymoron…😉 but I say that only from my experience. Desire is a craziness that burns so intensely fierce. Love is a tree that grows its roots between two trees. Have you ever read Captain Corelli’s Mandolin? There’s a beautiful passage about love spoken by the old doctor to his daughter. Your poem led me back to that. Thank you. I really enjoyed all that you brought. Kind regards K.
Thank you. That’s lovely.
