You bring your words to me

an offering

held in your open palms

like a supplicant.

I meet your fearful eyes

and tell you of your strengths,

coach through your weaknesses,

and encourage your improvement,

as gently as I can.

You reward me with your laughter,

a sound so rare that I am still celebrating

hours later,

so thankful

to be your teacher,

and have the chance to watch

your talent turn you into the

accomplished person

you will be.

I think the world is upside-down. Teachers should make what superintendents make. It’s one of the most important jobs on the planet.

    • Our superintendent doesn’t make too much more than we do- a little over $25,000 more than the top paid teachers in the district, and for the headaches, he’s welcome to it. We are paid a decent wage in Canada, ($40-85,000 year from first year teacher with bachelor degree to 10 year teacher with masters), but when our 18 year olds can walk out of school and make $100-150,000 a year just welding a pipe, I think something is out of whack!

      • narble Says:

In Oregon, salaries are all over the place. In Bend the average is $33K-$47K; in Portland it’s $35.5K-$52K. District Superintendents make $250K. I think that’s way too large a gap, but it is what it is. I am constantly amazed that great people dive into teaching and focus on the kids. It gives me hope.

      • Holy cow! You’re right! No public service manager should make more than 5X what his/her employees make! Yikes.

      • narble Says:

It certainly is a goofy equation.

  6. Shawn, I was an elementary school teacher for over 20 years. This struck a beautiful chord in my heart and soul. My favorite subject was teaching English mechanics through poetry. (sigh) I miss those days. Thanks for wandering over. I look forward to knowing you better.

  7. The poem will stay with me for some time, beautiful. No doubt I will be back to reread it and the others! They are all great, but didn’t want to spend all day writing on so many poems!

You deserve to be followed, you are an exceptional poet, and I’m sure and exceptional teacher!

    God Bless.

    • Thank you, Carl.

Some days, it’s the most amazing job on the planet. Hope our strike is settled soon, so our kids get the services they deserve!

      • Yes, I’m very very sorry to hear about that strike business, I’m in a small town in the UK so was unaware about it, is it a big thing in the states? Happens very occasionally here, once every few years for a few days only really.

      • I don’t live in the States, I live in British Columbia, Canada. We have a provincial government that has torn up contracts, had the supreme court (provincial and national) declare their actions unconstitutional, had the United Nations rule that they bargain in bad faith, and STILL they refuse to do what they have been ruled to do. Instead of putting the money into education, they are spending a fortune on propaganda against our teachers’ union. They cut taxes and now say there’s no funding, yet they voted themselves huge increases, and have huge expense accounts. We are very ticked off, because we are really fighting for democracy. If the money they’ve spent on propaganda was put into education, it would have funded our class size and composition requirements. SO frustrating! (Sorry for the rant!) lol

      • No problem, I didn’t see it as a rant, I wanted to know! It sounds like a horrible situation.

The injustices in this world just keep piling up, stay strong though Shawn.

As Rage Against the Machine say, take the power back!

      • We’re doing our best.
