Overheard at When Words Collide Writing Conference (Calgary):
“It’s strange just being at a writing conference. I kinda miss the Klingons wandering about.”
I am at a Writing conference that emerged from what was previously a Sci-fi and Fantasy writing conference. I have never before been around so many fantasy writers. They are quite an interesting crowd. How so? Well, I suspect most of them get the jokes on the Big Bang Theory. The Sci-Fi writers not only ‘get them’ they understand the physics and can critique it.
The fantasy writers can discuss the strategies to building religions, and crafting entire civilizations. They are experts at “building worlds.” To say they have imagination, is understatement.
In most crowds, I am one of the nerdiest people there. Around here, I am not even close. It is quite astonishing. I am thoroughly enjoying being with creative, intelligent, unique folks! I feel right at home. Here are writers, editors, and publishers who appreciate the skills and challenges, offer interesting perspectives, fun ideas. The banter and exploration is fascinating.
There is a lot of talent in this building! Talent that changes worlds with every stroke of their pens.
A token poem-
It doesn’t feel quite right
Not a Klingon in the room
But let the writers into light
They’ll draft some very soon.
Good night from Calgary, When Words Collide 2014!

Glad you are having a good time x
It has been quite great.
It sounds very cool, I did like to be there.
Really fun conference.
lol 🙂
Sci-Fi conventions are so wonderful. They are fodder for all kinds of stories within themselves. They make me remember why I like humanity in the first place, people being so unapologetically themselves.
and sooooo different, from say Middle School, where everyone is so desperately trying to be like everyone else.
It is always wonderful to be in your proper place.
lol Indeed.
Hi Shawn,
It was great to connect with you at When Words Collide! Thanks so much for your comments and interest in my workshop, and I hope you LOVE Game of Thrones when you get to it
🙂
I will be starting the audio book on my drive home! lol Thanks for enough warning so I could cover my ears!
I hope you enjoy it. That’s one of those books I suspect I’ll read again at least once. Have a safe drive home
Hilarious! I miss the Klingons too! All those monobrows and pointy eye teeth!
I have not had the pleasure of ever meeting one face to face.
I miss Star Trek, was a big fan of Voyager particularly, loved the female captain, Janeway. No new shows on the horizon 😦
I liked the original and watched the first few seasons of Next Gen, but didn’t get into the later incarnations.
The original series was fantastic because it was groundbreaking in its portrayal of all ethnicities in positions of authority, as well as women, though Kirk’s lascivious conquering of the universe is pretty hilarious and stereotyped females in a cosmic way! Janeway as the first female captain is interesting as she struggles with a sense of compassion, empathy, a desire to preserve life as well as a desire to perform her captainly duties. I read an feminist critique called “Breasts on the Bridge” and was kinda shocked to hear that most Janeway fans focussed on their preferences for her changing hairstyles!
It was a ground breaking series in many ways, but let’s face it: the masses usually have less esoteric reasons for watching their fav shows.
alas, so true
Sounds like much fun to be had. It is a shame the Klingons are not there tho – I hear they can party on down!
I imagine so! lol
Sc-Con
The Klingon met the Jjedi
On the way across the floor
The jedi glared
The Klingon stared
They were proudly nerds to the very core
Live Long & Prosper.;)
Live Long and Prosper!
Such an engaging style. Don’t stop!!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping by.
