Great selection from Stephen King’s On Writing, shared by The Ink Slinger.

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There’s no way around these two things that I’m aware of, no shortcut…

“The real importance of reading is that it creates an ease and intimacy with the process of writing; one comes to the country of the writer with one’s papers and identification pretty much in order. Constant reading will pull you into a place (a mind-set, if you like the phrase) where you can write eagerly and without self-consciousness. It also offers you a constantly growing knowledge of what has been done and what hasn’t, what is trite and what is fresh, what works and what just lies there dying (or dead) on the page. On Writing is one of the best books on the subject that I’ve read.

  4. King’s book is one of the better ones I’ve read for writers. Reading helps one find his style by understanding those of others.

I totally agree. I love King’s book. I’m new to your blog–we’re cabin mates over at Camp NaNoWriMo, so I’m kind of cyber-stalking everyone and wishing them luck with whatever they’re working on at the moment. 🙂

Hello cabin mate! I’m just going to recover from service project for Rotary in the 35C heat, and then it will be writing, writing, writing to get the NaNo ball rolling. Thanks for coming by! I’ll check out your page!

Happy Camp NaNoWriMo Day! We’re in the same cabin and I’m just stopping by to say hello. I wish you luck with your writing this month. I’m originally from Quesnel, so it was cool to see good ol’ Shuswap on your welcome page!

I lived in PG for years, so there ya go! Thanks for the greeting cabin-mate. I’m just home from some Rotary service at our Children’s Festival in the 35 C heat. A cold bath, a book, and then onto those NaNo words! Thanks for stopping in!
