Legs ache

mile after mile

hour after hour.

Grasp gasping.

Aim: medal.

Ahead: Finish

Smoke and

Noise

and

coloured paper falling

like ticker tape.

Metal.

Collapse  coughing

Pavement slick.

Legs ache.

  1. As a New Yorker who lived through September 11th, I’m heartsick about this terror attack in Boston. I cry for the little boy Martin who lost his life, his sister who lost a leg and the mother who now has brain damage. A family destroyed by another selfish act of violence. I still have not gotten over the children killed at Sandy Hook school. Many days I ask God why do innocents have to die or be maimed. Of course our stupid Senate is not helping. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/18/us/politics/senate-obama-gun-control.html?emc=na&_r=0
    The World is going insane.

I don’t imagine for a minute that things are any worse now than they have ever been, though the scales may be larger. There have always been people who hurt others for their own purposes. Imagine living in Poland during WW2, or France during the revolution, or Russia in the 1920s. Or Bosnia in the 80s. I think the grief of the decent people is the only way to fight the power hungry or the violent.

  2. In football there is a saying, “Run to open space; there is always open space.” In other words, look for opportunity; place your attention and energy there. The bad guys, the insane, they want you to forget this.

This poem is really beautiful. It’s brilliant.
Sometimes the worst things can be beautiful.
