It wasn’t one

to grab you so tightly that my fingers turned white

and to kiss you until my lips bled in bed at night.

It wasn’t one

to dream it could possibly be me and you

or to fight to make it true.

It wasn’t one

to fill every day with our love year after year

then to fight as days filled with fear.

What was one

was that your body betrayed us

and you’re riding off into the sunset

without me.

.

For David & Julia

But though he left me back in 2007 for a younger woman at least I got the cats. I guess you could say your poem really struck a nerve and released emotions within me. Looking on the good side of it all at least he’s not torturing and tormenting me any longer and I’ve learned to discover and appreciate myself without needing a man for affirmation. I’ve also had the opportunity to find my passion and calling in life which I would have never done if we would have stayed together so really him leaving me for the upgrade was the best thing to happen for me.

Loss takes many forms. I’m glad your loss helped you grow stronger. It’s the power of poetry that we can each connect to it in our own way.

I was thinking about Julia’s cancer winning the fight yesterday, and David’s great loss as a result.
