2. Communicate
The publican doesn’t understand my words, but I mime sleep; he pulls out the ledger. I mime drinking; he pulls a pint.
I’ll be okay here, if my luck holds.

“I need to be heard,” I say to my husband who responds with his normal silence. Sighing and reluctant, I pull the plug. He ignores me for the last time.
