I wake to

the scrape of the snow shovel

below my window,

and the rumble of

the plow on the road.

The air is white

with winter

now.

Great use of line length to establish a rhythm. And you used very simple language to establish a scene so well. Very skillfully done!

There is a lot of sound in this poem. Nicely done.

Shawn, your poem is lovely and touched my grieving heart with beauty. I lost my beautiful cat, Murphy, suddenly on Friday early. Peaceful but sad.

I love the showflake shape of the poem, and the poem itself of course!

  10. I haven’t seen much snow for several years, but how I remember waking up to those plows rumbling down the road. Visiting the Northeast this year at Xmas – your poem is getting me in the mood.

the final word in this poem could also be “snow” – and when I read the poem I want to insert that word! Anyhow, this poem is exactly what I experienced sleeping at my Aunt’s house in Buffalo last week – the snow was falling and the scrape and rumble woke me a few times – as the white of winter was in the air – nice poem!

    • There wasn’t any snow falling at the time, but the sky was pale grey with mist. So while I could have used poetic licence and made it snow, I tried to stick to facts, this time. 😉
