Band room:
contained in music
insulated from the world
wrapped in rhythm.
Sanctuary
while I waited
for my love.

While I was editing Grace Awakening Myth today, I came across this observation in chapter 3 or 4, and I thought Ben’s words sounded like a poem. Now they are! (How appropriate, since Ben is Orpheus, demi-god of music and poetry!)
What was YOUR sanctuary in high school? For me, it was either the art room where I spent hours working on school yearbooks, or Mr. Gobolos’ math room, where a gang of us hung out, played goofy drama games, and discussed theology.
Band room! It was so long ago, yet I believe I go there every night in my dreams. It’s what got me through high school.
It is definitely a sanctuary for some pretty amazing kids. I was not a bandie (just choir and musical theatre) but the band room figures prominently in my third novel. 🙂
Every lunch for almost 3 years, we ate lunch in Mr. Christie’s class room 🙂 As I read Grace, I totally picture Mr.Howie’s band room at PVSS in the first half 🙂
lol Mr Howie’s band room at PVSS is now Mr Majerich’s band room, but I suspect that some of the same posters are on the walls! The music stands and many instruments are probably the same as well. There are still die-hard kids in there every lunch hour, many mornings, and after school.
I wasn’t very musical…for me it was the social studies resource room (lol). In senior year when we were allowed off campus, the Ben & Jerry’s down the street.Hadn’t thought of it in a while, but definitely have warm feelings toward both places!
Ooh. Ben & Jerry’s. That could be dangerous to the waist line!
